In recent orchid news...

One of my orchids did the strangest thing recently. After all its buds had opened and many of the flowers were spent and had fallen off, the tip of the stem decided to keep growing and shoot out brand new buds. Now it has old blooms, new blooms and an ongoing supply of fresh orchid buds.
Well I find it exciting anyway.

Feel better

My number one guy had to go in for a minor surgery three days ago and he asked specifically if I could get him some of those blue spiky flowers, so I threw in some blue hydrangea to fill it out (and keep it manly). He's doing very well now.

Just playing with flowers.

Some more arrangements from this past week that I made at the Flowerbox. I still don't quite feel back in the groove of designing, (the feeling I lost after the move to Vancouver) but I'm getting there.

mom flowers 001

My mom gets into town today! These are some welcome to my tiny apartment, hope you don't like personal space, flowers. When my dad was just in town I also filled the house with flowers, but there wasn't anything quite this nice to choose from. I had this large vase full of Queen Anne's Lace when he and his wife were here. I love Queen Anne's, but it has this nasty little habit of shedding all over the table, so we were constantly wiping it up.
And yes these flowers are this ridiculously bright in person, perhaps even more so.

fluorescent cuts

july 26 cuts 001

Two bouquets I made at the Flowerbox yesterday. It sure felt very summery in the shop with all the vibrant fresh flowers -- good thing we at least had air conditioning.

Trout Lake

trout lake 001

Last week I took myself out for a sunny afternoon at Trout Lake, down the street from my place. I basically just shopped for dogs the whole day, watching every different breed you could imagine prance and play around in the water. The work girls and I also got a bit of delicious take-out from Bandidas Taqeria a few evenings earlier and watched the sunset. Oh summer.

Grouse mountain + family times

grouse 001

Sorry for the absent blogging this week. My father and stepmom were just in town and staying with me for a few days so we were all enjoying the Vancouver sights and beautiful weather. Yesterday we traveled up Grouse mountain which was a lot more entertaining and interesting than I had expected. We opted to take the gondola up -- rather than do the near-vertical hike -- which was cramped and expensive, but very cool. Once at the top we were able to watch the funny lumberjack performance and went up even higher on the chair lift. The views were, as you may expect, fantastic. We were also lucky to get a good view of the two orphan grizzly bears that live in a large enclosure up on the mountain. The one bear was having a good time in the water playing with a stick with his hind legs and sticking his head under the water to blow bubbles. Cute cuddly little guys, behind an electric fence.
