smart little muffin

my attempt at making these. but with only whole wheat flour, no granulated sugar, some oats, some walnuts, some nutmeg, and some frozen raspberries. next time i would chop the apples a little smaller.

also (this means you: mom, eliz, roz, lisa) does anyone have any suggestions for feminist reading material? it could be essay/editorial form, or simply a really good book with hints of feminist ideals. i'm just noticing that i've never read anything directly related to feminism, unless you count some of the old literature classics written by women and therefore a progressive feminist move just in its creation and publication (when they used their real names.)
just looking for a bit of perspective inbetween my muffin baking. thank you.

my friend the sun

came for a brief visit this afternoon. see you again in a few days buddy.

to live with a to-be chef

the first of four days off today. i didn't know what to do with myself, so i got a migraine and went out for brunch. i can officially make better french toast than the restaurant i stole the idea from.
took a three hour nap when i got back. i fell asleep to music and dreamed i had created the ultimate mix-tape. i'm listening to the same cds over again now, but i just cannot figure it out.

have i shown you my roommate's knife collection before? no? i didn't think so. i guess you could say i was i bit bored if i felt the need to google the cost of every knife. wanna guess the total? $1478.00, plus the little cheese knife which i couldn't identify, so we'll just round up to a cool $1500.

i'm not saying i'm not jealous, i'm just saying i only use the little one and the bread one. oh and the choppy one.

oh ruby

here i was this afternoon staring off into space, listening to electric warrior, and trying my hardest to come up with a way to make peanut butter cookies healthy. it must be possible! finally my frustration awoke ruby from her chair and she said "dude, it's a peanut butter cookie. just make it the good way" and she was right. so i made these cookies from smitten kitchen. and i'll pretend they're healthy because i left out 1/4 cup of the 3 pounds of sugar and only sprinkled them with sugar at the end (instead of rolling them in it.) oh and i added pecans.

and yes, i have thought about the correlation between my lack of new friends and the recent frequency of ruby talking in my blog, and i have concluded that there is no need to worry.

holding on

what's left of the flowers from saturday. not bad.

hanging out with the rubes today (i don't mean the definition of rube, i just mean my cat ruby, who might very well be a rube, but since she doesn't talk much, it's hard to tell) munching on tuna melts and cucumbers, listening to est and reading one of my many new magazines.

cold and sunny today

just like a true city should be, but i cannot help but long for the heat and smells and feel of summertime.
if you haven't checked out nokomis' new spring line yet, do it now. the images are truly stunning and have managed to capture everything a prairie summer should be. i ordered the wheat pants in black today.

what i've learned

the first florist i worked for, who told me not to pair white with other colours in arrangements, was wrong.

so as it turns out

i can make a perfect pie. no big deal.

for joseph's birthday yesterday i wanted to try something a little different. cupcakes or an elaborately decorated, albeit simple tasing, cake are my usual birthday specialty. however this year, as we are alone in a new city i wanted joseph to have a taste of home. luba, joseph's mom would often make the boys an apple pie for birthdays, but with an extra crunchy cheddar crust. to this day there is nothing joseph would want more (not that he wouldn't have been more than happy with just about anything sweet). i used my mom's never-fail pie crust (see the outside of the crisco box...but don't tell anyone) and added a heaping cup of shredded medium cheddar cheese. it worked out amazingly. the pie crust is still flaky and delicious, but with a very faint added savory taste (just enough to balance out the usual overwhelmingly sweetness of the pie filling) and a nice satisfying crunch. the dough itself was not much different to work with, although a little harder to roll and if you created a hole, it was much harder to mend.

so now i am inspired. i bought a beautiful new plum coloured pie dish and i want to put it to good use. i want to try different fruit/cheese combos. the only problem i have discovered with pie (in addition to how quickly it can get eaten) is how completely impossible it is to make healthy. sure you can be getting a full serving of fruit with your white flour and shortening, but it just doesn't seem to balance out. i'll have to get back to you once i figure out the secret to healthy pie.

staghorn love

image originally uploaded by design*sponge
i love love love the sneak peak on design sponge this morning. the owner of the apartment is a floral designer from brooklyn that i have spied on before -- her work is so soft and beautiful. i have had a staghorn fern for the last couple of years and have been lucky at keeping it fairly healthy. it is in recovery at the moment as it froze a bit during our drive to vancouver in january, but when it is back and thriving i would love to figure out a way to mount it to the wall like in this photo.

whale gale early morning

a wind warning for metro vancouver today. these are photos from my balcony this morning. the belugas seem to have lost all control of their regular steady flight -- flipping upside-down, crashing into seagulls, etc.
in the five mintues since i took the photos the fog is already pushing its way beyond the mountains, downtown is almost in sunshine, and the belugas have regained their flight paths. phew.
got up at 6am on my day off to make joseph birthday french toast with brie and berries and earl grey.
